What is medical microneedling and how does it work?
Medical microneedling, uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin’s surface. This triggers the body’s natural wound-healing cascade, activating fibroblasts to produce fresh collagen and elastin, essential proteins that restore firmness, elasticity, and a smoother, healthier appearance.
The Dermapen 4 (Dp4 Microneedling pen) creates millions of vertical micro-channels at precise depths, safely targeting deeper layers of skin up to 104% faster than other microneedling devices. These channels can carry up to 80% more topical nutrients deeper into the skin. This process remodels skin from within, improving texture, tone, scars, pores, fine lines, and mild laxity.
How is medical microneedling different from at-home devices?
- Medical microneedling: Performed by a licensed medical professional using FDA-cleared devices with adjustable depth, targeting true collagen remodeling zones.
- At-home rollers: Superficial, less effective, and pose greater risks when used improperly (infection, trauma).
In the state of Washington only licensed medical providers with the appropriate training and master estheticians can perform medical microneedling.
Who is a good candidate for microneedling?
- Individuals with acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven tone, fine lines, mild laxity, stretch marks, rosacea, pigmentation concerns
- Healthy adults seeking natural skin rejuvenation
Who should not have microneedling?
- Active acne or infections in the treatment area
- Uncontrolled rosacea or eczema
- Pregnant individuals
- Currently on or have been chemotherapy in the past year
- Those on anticoagulants
How many sessions are needed to achieve results and how long do the results last?
- Most clients benefit from a series of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, but the timing and number of treatments varies based on the condition being treated and your skin’s response.
- Results can last 6–12 months or longer depending on skin health, lifestyle, and aftercare.
A fully customized treatment plan will be created for you. Maintenance treatments will be tailored to your goals and skin’s needs.
Is there downtime after microneedling?
Microneedling causes micro trauma to the skin, therefore it is important to provide the optimal environment for healing especially within the first 3-4 days post treatment. This includes proper post treatment regimen and avoiding the activities below for up to 2 days:
•Direct ultra-violet exposure (sun and solariums/sun beds)
•Intensive cardio, exercise or gymnasium regimens
•Excessively hot showers, bathing, spas or sauna
•Further aesthetic treatments (including, but not limited to, microdermabrasion, laser, intense pulsed light, chemical peels, muscle relaxant injections and dermal fillers)
•Spray or self-tanning
•Swimming in chlorinated pools or the ocean
•Tattooing (including cosmetic tattooing)
Mild redness and sensitivity typically resolve within 1-3 days.
Healing time varies depending on skin condition and treatment depth.
Timing with Botox treatments:
- Microneedling is best performed before Botox, waiting 7-10 days before Botox injections.
- If Botox is done first, microneedling should wait at least 7-14 days to avoid disrupting Botox results.
Exact timing and sequence will be customized for your needs.
